With this catalogue of the first exhibition entirely dedicated to the works of W. J. J. Nuyen, I hope to contribute to ensuring that the name of the rediscovered artistic genius Nuyen lives on among future generations.

This exhibition, in this form and scope, certainly would not have come about without the extraordinary cooperation of authorities and private individuals.

I owe special thanks to Messrs. L. J. F. Wijsenbeek and K. E. Schuurman, respectively Director and Curator of the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, who gave the impetus to make this exhibition a success by lending Nuyen's works to their management. My great thanks also go to Messrs. Jhr. D. C. Roell, General Director of the Rijksmuseum, Jhr W. J. H.B. Sandberg, Director of the Municipal Museums, both in Amsterdam, D. F. Lunsingh Scheurleer, Director of the Service for the Dispersed Works of Art of the State, in The Hague, Prof. A. M. Hammacher, Director of the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, J. C. Ebbinge Wubben, Director of the Museum Boymans in Rotterdam, and Miss Dr. G. H. Kurtz, Municipal Archivist in Haarlem, who likewise willingly donated Nuyen's works from their collections and provided the most pleasant cooperation.

To this I must add that many private individuals and good associates were willing to help me by donating their art collections for this exhibition. I would also not like to forget my friends in the press who stood by my side with advice and assistance, and in particular Mr. Cornelis Veth, who was willing to help me with the compilation of the catalogue and to write the introduction. It remains for me to express my gratitude for the article that the bear Alex Campaert wrote for this catalogue and for the assistance received from the National Bureau for Art Historical Documentation.
