Description

This canvas dates from 1837, two years before the painter's death. It depicts a peaceful scene of sailing ships lying at the quay, with passengers being received on one of them.

Purchased in the spring of 1843 from the Nieuwenhuijs art dealership in Paris for 9,357 francs (approximately 4,400 guilders), together with paintings by A. van Strij (catalogue number 43.1), Kobell (catalogue number 43.2), Schotel (catalogue number 43.3), and Ommeganck (catalogue number 43.4), and destined for the house in The Hague.

See the same scene mirrored ‘Ceremonial ship on a Dutch river – 1839’

Provenance

  • 1843 Spring bougth with art gallery Nieuwenhuijs in Paris price FF 9357 (about dfl 4400)
  • Foundation Castle Twickel, Delden (Hof van Twente). Through inheritance
  • Weldam Castle. Sources: Twickel House Archive 2882 (purchase note) 1229/2 (receipt of payment to Nieuwenhuijs), 1357 (inventory 1876/77 Lange Voorhout) and Family Archive at Weldam (inventory 1912 Lange Voorhout) (valuation report A. Nijstad 1942). After Van Heeckeren's death, the painting came into the possession of his daughter and remained hanging in the house in The Hague. After her death in 1912, the painting came into the possession of her youngest son. It currently hangs at Weldam Castle. Since the purchase, hardly anything has changed about the painting, and it is still partially attached to the frame with the original nails.
